Scope Devices as Active, Inactive, or Not-in-Scope
Manage device scope in Sprinto by marking staff devices as Active, Inactive, or Not-in-Scope to ensure accurate compliance tracking.
Sprinto allows you to classify staff devices into three categories—Active, Inactive, or Not-in-Scope—based on their reporting status and operational relevance. Proper scoping ensures accurate compliance tracking and prevents unnecessary failures for devices that should not be monitored.
This article explains how to manage device scope status via the Staff Devices dashboard.
Device Scope Categories
Active
Devices that are in use and have reported their health status within the expected timeframe.
Inactive
Devices that have not reported within the configured window (e.g. >90 days) or belong to offboarded staff.
Not-in-Scope
Devices temporarily excluded from monitoring—for example, if being replaced or reassigned.
Sprinto only maps compliance checks to Active devices. Inactive and Not-in-Scope devices are excluded from compliance validations.
When to Use Each Scope
Device used by a current staff member and reporting as expected
Active
Device no longer in use or tied to offboarded staff
Inactive
Device is transitioning (e.g. staff reassignment or upgrade)
Not-in-Scope
Mark a Device as Not-in-Scope
Log in to the Sprinto admin portal.
Navigate to Apps > Staff Devices and select your configured MDM provider.
Go to the Active Devices tab.
Find the device you want to exclude.
Click Mark as Not-in-Scope under the Device Scope options.
(Optional) Add a reason for exclusion.
Click Mark Not-in-Scope to apply the change.
Mark a Device as In-Scope (Reactivate)
To return a previously excluded device to active monitoring:
Go to the Not-in-Scope tab.
Locate the device you want to include.
Click Mark as In-Scope.
Confirm the action by clicking Mark Device In-Scope.
Automatic Scope Transitions
Inactive status is applied automatically if:
Dr. Sprinto has not reported from the device in over 90 days.
A third-party MDM has not synced data within 24 hours.
The associated staff member has been offboarded.
You can override automatic scoping manually at any time.
What You Can Do
Regularly clean up old or unused devices to maintain audit hygiene.
Use Not-in-Scope for temporary exclusions rather than deleting devices.
Avoid failing checks by ensuring only relevant devices are marked as Active.
