# Scope Devices as Active, Inactive, or Not-in-Scope

Sprinto allows you to classify staff devices into three categories—**Active**, **Inactive**, or **Not-in-Scope**—based on their reporting status and operational relevance. Proper scoping ensures accurate compliance tracking and prevents unnecessary failures for devices that should not be monitored.

This article explains how to manage device scope status via the Staff Devices dashboard.

### Device Scope Categories

<table><thead><tr><th width="133.1171875">Scope</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Active</strong></td><td>Devices that are in use and have reported their health status within the expected timeframe.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Inactive</strong></td><td>Devices that have not reported within the configured window (e.g. >90 days) or belong to offboarded staff.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Not-in-Scope</strong></td><td>Devices temporarily excluded from monitoring—for example, if being replaced or reassigned.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Sprinto only maps compliance checks to **Active** devices. Inactive and Not-in-Scope devices are excluded from compliance validations.

### When to Use Each Scope

{% hint style="info" %}
The device will move to the **Active Devices** tab. Device status must be reported again to prevent scope expiry.
{% endhint %}

### Automatic Scope Transitions

* **Inactive** status is applied automatically if:
  * Dr. Sprinto has not reported from the device in over 90 days.
  * A third-party MDM has not synced data within 24 hours.
  * The associated staff member has been offboarded.
* You can override automatic scoping manually at any time.

***

### What You Can Do

* Regularly clean up old or unused devices to maintain audit hygiene.
* Use **Not-in-Scope** for temporary exclusions rather than deleting devices.
* Avoid failing checks by ensuring only relevant devices are marked as **Active**.
